All living things are subject to sickness and disease. This includes your beloved discus fish. Discus fish diseases? Discus fish disease is quite common in home aquariums. You shouldn’t be surprised, because all animals are susceptable to sickness and disease, and this includes your favorite aquarium fish.
You go to a doctor when you get sick. You take your dog or cat to the vet when they get sick. What about fish? Is there an “Urgent Care For Fish” in your neighborhood? Unfortunately, there is not a Fish Hospital in most neighborhoods. You will need to educate yourself on treatment procedures.
The normal culprets that cause fish diseases are pathogens. They are the itty bitty critters that infect things. It is possible that pathogens are in the water of your tank even now. It is also possible that these non-friendly little pathogens are living in and under the slime layer of your fish… the layer that is suppposed to protect the fish.
There are several reasons for discus fish disease. It is actually natural for some disease carrying pathogens to call a discus fish “home”. This means that when you introduce a new fish to your tank, it could already be infected and bring that infection into the tank.

However, there are other ways for pathogens to thrive in a domestic tank. Some of these reasons follow:
* Humans can cause their own problems by adding stress to the discus. Things like tapping on the side of the tank too much can be stress builders. And, keeping aggressive fish in with discus is not good for their psychology either.
* Water quality – incorrect temperature or pH
* Nutritional deficiencies
You don’t have to have a Master’s degree in discus fish care, but a good medical fish manual will help. Or, a list of good websites where you can do some quick research. Knowing the proper dosage when your fish needs medical treatment is of the utmost importance. If you do have to give medication to your fish, you may want to contact a discus professional.
And remember this – mixing medications should never be done if you are not familiar with the consequences. In other words, unless the intructions on the medicine tell you to mix… don’t. Mixing medications could result in extremely unfavorable outcomes, including death. Also, don’t over-treat, and don’t over-analyze the problem. You could end up creating new problems or making the existing problem worse. Just as in humans, the right dosage is critical. Adding medication does not necessarily mean that the problem will go away quicker. Just because one drop is instructed does not mean that two is better. follow the instructions.
When treating a diseased tank, remember that it takes time for the fish to respond to treatment. Don’t be impatient. Quick cures are as uncommon in fish as they are in humans. Another thing to be aware of is to follow through with treatment in the case of bacterial infection. This should continue for 10 days, even if the tank looks healthy again. If you don’t totally anhialate the disease bacteria, you could run the risk of a stronger strain developing that is resistant to the antibiotic you were using to treat the first batch. Run the treatment for the proper length of time and make sure of success.
